“Some of the best contemporary British jazz from outside London.” – London Jazz News

Stoney Lane is an independent artist-led record label, growing out of a whole host of musical inventions, collaborations, experiments, friendships and performances, centered around the city of Birmingham, UK. We focus on distinctive and exciting new music and artists that we love, venturing wherever the music takes us – often with jazz at its heart, yet crossing the eclectic worlds of improvisation to contemporary classical, electronics to world and roots-inspired music.

Stoney Lane supports and develops exceptional young UK musicians, alongside internationally touring and established artists, whilst releasing only a select number of albums each year as we strive to maintain the artistry, adventure and surprise of our releases. We still produce lovely physical album on both CD and vinyl, from limited edition hand pressings to experimental artwork and original design, alongside properly-nurtured HQ audio.

Already the Stoney Lane catalogue is home to recordings featuring the talents of Chris Mapp, Hans Koller, Mike Fletcher, Paul Dunmall, Percy Pursglove, Sara Colman, Steve Banks & Trish Clowes to young musicians burgeoning from Birmingham and beyond, including Alex Woods, Ben Lee, David Ferris, Jonathan Silk, Mark Pringle, Xhosa Cole and Young Pilgrims, to leading lights Arve Henriksen, John O’Gallagher, Peter Bernstein, Stan Sulzmann, Steve Swallow and the NDR Bigband.

We produce the Cheltenham Jazz Festival record store in for the six days of the festival each spring, with live sessions in-store, whilst 2024 sees the adventurous new Stoney Lane Live series launching in Birmingham. Opening with legendary American guitarist Bill Frisell, the programme will bring prominent UK, US and European artists to Birmingham, spanning the musical roots weaving through jazz, improvisation, flamenco, Arabic, Eastern European and Indian music, alongside new commissions; collaborations with Flatpack Film Festival, Birmingham City University and artists from Birmingham Royal Ballet; special community tickets and performances; and a stellar line-up of label artists and musicians from the city playing and recording alongside visiting international guests.

Forthcoming 2023-4 releases include saxophonist Paul Dunmall’s Big Band recording; saxophonist Trish Clowes and pianist Ross Stanley live from Wigmore Hall; Ribbons – a new duo project from vocalist Sara Colman and pianist Rebecca Nash; pianist David Ferris featuring US guitarist Peter Bernstein; and the third release from Xhosa Cole, with the music of Thelonious Monk recorded live during a 38-date UK tour. Later in 2024 we hope to bring the long-awaited Far Reaching Dreams of Mortal Souls suite from trumpeter Percy Pursglove, recorded in Germany.

Buy, listen and download all of our records at our Emporium, with releases also available from Propermusic / Amazon UK / iTunes; your local independent record store, plus all digital streaming sites.

(‘Stoney Lane’ was the home of West Bromwich Albion, from 1885 to 1900, a time when they actually won something for a change.  Our catalogue numbers follow a similarly misguided path).
